Virtual Link Monitor
The SmartView
Monitor's Virtual Link Monitor measures and displays
end-to-end performance characteristics of site-to-site
VPN tunnels crossing IP networks like the Internet.
Metrics presented include bandwidth, bandwidth loss, and
round trip time.

measure of the rate of data flow through a VPN
tunnel.

Bandwidth loss
is a measure of the packets dropped during
communications between two VPN sites.

Round trip time
is a measure of the time it takes for a packet to
travel from one gateway to another, and back.
Round trip
time can be plotted and compared
to a user defined
service level agreement.

Metrics displayed by the Virtual
Link Monitor can be compared to a user defined service
level agreement (SLA). An SLA may correspond to network
service provider performance guarantee, or to corporate
performance benchmarks. Service level infractions can be
viewed in real time, or they can be logged for
periodical analysis with
reporting tools.
Maximize
VPN ROI
To maximize VPN ROI, most
organizations would like to take advantage of their VPN
networks for as many applications as possible. However,
many are hesitant to deploy certain applications due to
uncertainties regarding performance across public
networks like the Internet. The Virtual Link Monitor can
provide network managers with the end-to-end performance
information necessary to make this decision confidently.
Interface Monitor
The SmartView Monitor's Interface
Monitor presents a granular performance analysis of the
network link directly connected to a gateway interface
(usually the Internet access link). Performance can be
analyzed according to a source, destination, service, or
by FloodGate-1 rule.
The Interface
Monitor can display bandwidth allocation
according to
FloodGate-1 rules.
Improve
Performance
Information gathered by the
Interface Monitor may be used to take action to improve VPN performance. For example, the Interface Monitor may
be used to analyze the distribution of Internet link
bandwidth to VPN traffic relative to all other traffic.
If non-VPN traffic is dominating the line, a QoS
solution like
FloodGate-1 can improve
VPN performance by assigning it priority versus other
applications.
Integration with Check Point
Gateway Products
The SmartView
Monitor works in conjunction with Check Point's gateway
products including VPN-1, FloodGate-1, and FireWall-1.
Performance data is collected by gateway enforcement
points and continuously streamed to a central Check
Point management server. The management server
consolidates and analyzes the data before it is
displayed via Check Point's integrated management
client. VPN-1 and FireWall-1 users can be up and running
in a matter of minutes without the need to deploy
additional hardware or learn a new user interface. This
level of integration reduces cost and complexity when
compared to dedicated network monitoring alternatives.
In addition, integration allows the Interface Monitor to
analyze flows within the VPN tunnel.
The
SmartView Monitor Monitoring is integrated every level
with Check Point gateway solutions. There is no need to
deploy and maintain additional hardware or software.
Licensing
The SmartView Monitor is included at
no extra charge with any FloodGate-1 installation. For
installations that do not include Floodgate-1, the
SmartView Monitor is priced and licensed on a per
gateway basis. Contact your Check Point reseller for
specific pricing information.
