Profile-based Management Solution For Very Large-scale VPN/Security Deployments

Check Point's Large Scale Manager introduces a new management paradigm for large-scale VPN/security installations, and is an extension of SmartCenter Pro. Using Large Scale Manager, administrators can very quickly and easily provision security for hundreds of gateways using templates. In addition, automated processes for policy installation and updates enable rapid deployment and minimize management requirements. This reduces the costs and time required to deploy and manage security for hundreds or hundreds of gateways.

Profile-based Policy Creation
 

SmartLSM simplifies VPN/security policy configuration by using templates called "profiles". Profiles are used to configure the properties of a branch office gateway. Once a profile is defined it can be associated with an unlimited number of branch office gateways. The branch office gateways that are assigned to a particular profile inherit all of the profile's properties and its VPN/security policy. When the VPN/security policy is updated to reflect change in the enterprise environment, administrators simply update the profiles. These updated profiles are applied automatically to all the branch office gateways. Profile-based management eliminates the need to configure hundreds of gateways individually, reducing the time taken to provision and maintain security for large environments.

Automatic Policy-fetching
 

SmartLSM uses pull technology for policy installation on the branch office gateways. Instead of the management server initiating communication with each of a thousand branch office gateways individually, branch office gateways periodically fetch their VPN/security policy from the management server. This reduces the load on the management server. Branch office gateways can be configured to fetch their VPN/security policy from one of multiple management servers in a single SmartLSM environment. This eliminates a single point of failure and ensures round the clock management availability.
 

Single View Monitoring
 

SmartLSM works in conjunction with the SmartDashboard to define, manage and monitor branch office gateways. Administrators can view the status of each branch office gateway, including what profile it is associated with and what version of the VPN/security policy it is enforcing. In addition, critical notifications about branch office gateways are also displayed that alert administrators to take appropriate action.

SmartLSM manages and monitors the standard Check Point VPN-1 Pro gateway at the corporate headquarter site, and VPN-1 Net or VPN-1/ FireWall-1 Small Office gateways at branch office sites.

SMART Logging
 

SmartLSM delivers a comprehensive logging infrastructure to manage logs generated by hundreds of branch office gateways. Logs can either be collected locally or be offloaded to a central log server at the corporate headquarters site. Multiple log servers may be deployed and if the designated primary log server becomes unavailable, logs can be automatically redirected to a secondary log server.

Tracking logs from individual branch office gateways can become a concern since their IP addresses change frequently. The management server assigns each branch office gateway a static, unique identifier. This makes it simple to track and analyze logs generated by an individual branch office gateway.
